Employee Holiday Gift Guide

Employees exchanging gifts during the holidays
The holiday season is a great time to thank your employees for their hard work and remind them how much you appreciate them. There is a lot of uncertainty, however, when it comes to giving gifts in a work setting—especially if you’re new to the company.

It’s always a good idea to ask around and see what the expectations are at your specific workplace. In addition to that, we’ve compiled a few tips to help you prepare for the season ahead.

How much should you spend on each gift? That answer depends on the organization you’re in, the history of your team or department, and personal preference. The general range that’s recommended for employee gifts is anywhere from $10-$50 each, and we would recommend staying under $100 in almost all cases.

Another great alternative to gifts is planning an event or experience to do together as a group. You could schedule a team lunch or potluck, organize a Secret Santa or white elephant exchange, or set aside time for a group outing.

If you are planning on getting gifts for each of your employees, we’ve listed a few ideas below. We also recommend getting the same gifts for each member of your team instead of trying to personalize too much—it makes it easier to stick to your budget and avoids any perception of favoritism.

Gift cards

Gift cards are one of the simplest options, and they’re always great to receive. You can pick a general gift card and give it to everyone on your team, or you could personalize each gift by picking somewhere specific for each team member. Just make sure to keep them all the same amount!

Coffee or Chocolates

Coffee and chocolates are common gifts for a reason! Give your employees something to enjoy over the holidays with their families—even better, pick up sweets or coffee grounds from a local business near you to support your local economy!

Personalized notebooks or desk accessories

A new notebook, calendar, or desk accessory will give your employees a fresh start for the new year and something they’re excited to come back to the office and use. They can enjoy it all year long, and bring a smile to their face whenever they see it during the workday.

Books or board games

Give them the gift of relaxation or fun with their family! A book to read during the holidays or a game to enjoy while they’re at home, are great gift ideas and can make the special moments of the holidays even more joyful.

Gift set or care package

If you have a little more money to spend, a gift set or care package are great ways to show your employees you appreciate them. Companies like Bath & Body Works have corporate gift options to buy everything in one stop, or you can try out companies like Caroo to put together personalized packages for each of your team members.

Extended vacation

Another gift option that everyone would love is a few extra days of vacation! With the traveling and hosting so many people are worried about this time of year, a few unexpected days would be very appreciated. It’s simple to give, and it shows how much you care for your employees’ wellbeing.

There are so many ways to show your employees you care about them this holiday season! Even a thoughtful, handwritten note will go a long way. No matter what you choose to do or how much money you have (or don’t have!) to spend, it’s the thought and intention behind the gift that matters.
