United Community Bank Strengthens Commercial Lending Leadership

  • Posted on January 25, 2021
United Community Bank is proud to announce a new leader for its growing Middle Market and Asset Based Lending divisions. Experienced banker John Thompson has been named Middle Market and Asset Based Lending Division Manager, effective this month. This is an expanded role for Thompson, who has been with United since 2011. He will manage and grow the bank’s Middle Market team, while continuing to manage his existing and future clients and partnering with our local markets on Middle Market opportunities. He will also take on the Asset-Based Lending responsibilities, as those two areas are closely aligned.

“John’s leadership and success has been, and continues to be, a key driver of growth of our Middle Market Division,” said Doug Higgins, Atlanta Metro President for United Community Bank. “His experience, credit skill, ability to partner with other bankers and relationship-oriented approach make him the ideal person to assume the leadership of both of these divisions.”

Thompson has more than 25 years of banking experience. He has served as a Middle Market Relationship Manager for United since 2011. Prior to that, he managed Commercial Lines of Business for SunTrust Bank in the Georgia Region. He has been primarily focused on Commercial banking since he began his career with First Union, now Wells Fargo.

“United is extremely well positioned to serve our commercial clients based on our size and expertise, and we are eager to continue the growth of these two critically important lines of business,” said Thompson. “I look forward to working with business clients throughout our footprint to obtain the right type of funding that will support their growth goals.”

Thompson received a Bachelor in Business Administration from Mercer University and a Masters in Business Administration from Emory University. He has been heavily involved in community organizations over the years, including board service on Savannah-based Neighborhood Housing Services, Macon Chamber of Commerce, Savannah Girl Scout Council, Navicent Children’s Hospital and more. Thompson is a graduate of Leadership Savannah.
