United Community Bank celebrates groundbreaking of new company headquarters

  • Posted on March 30, 2022
GREENVILLE, S.C. – March 30, 2022 – United Community Bank celebrated the groundbreaking of its new corporate headquarters in downtown Greenville yesterday with approximately 200 attendees, including South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. During the ceremony, Gov. McMaster also presented United Community Bank Chairman and CEO Lynn Harton with the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian honor for outstanding service to the state and outstanding achievements of South Carolina citizens.

“United Community Bank establishing their new headquarters in South Carolina will not only create new jobs in the short term but will pave the way for a stronger economy for years to come,” said Governor Henry McMaster. “This announcement would not have been possible without the efforts of Mr. Lynn Harton and his recognition of South Carolina as the ideal place to do business. This project is just one more example of his continued commitment to his community and South Carolina as a whole, which is why I’m proud to present him with the Order of the Palmetto.”

Lynn Harton joined United Community Bank in 2012, but first arrived in South Carolina in 2007 while working with The South Financial Group, parent company of Carolina First Bank. He became CEO of United in 2017 and was elected Chairman the Board of United Community Banks, Inc. in 2019.

Over the past 15 years, Harton has grown United’s presence in South Carolina from just one employee to more than 600, and recently relocated the company headquarters to South Carolina, making it the largest bank headquartered in the state. United Community Bank has partnered with businesses around the state to provide financing for growth and development, supporting the state’s economy in a variety of ways. Harton has been highly committed to philanthropic efforts throughout the state, both on a professional and personal level.

United Community Bank is beginning construction on its new corporate headquarters at 200 E. Camperdown Way in downtown Greenville, near the Reedy River and Falls Park. United relocated its headquarters to South Carolina in 2021 and currently has 650 employees in the state, including three downtown Greenville corporate offices, following several years of growth in the area. The building is expected to be completed in spring 2024 and will house more than 300 employees, including all company executives. The building will also have a state-of-the-art retail branch in a convenient location for area customers.

“Today, we are taking a big step forward by celebrating the move of our headquarters to Greenville and a new building overlooking Falls Park – the heart of the city – where we can continue to grow for years to come. We are excited for what’s ahead for this state, this community and our company. We look forward to growing together,” said Lynn Harton.

The building is being designed to meet the WELL Building Standard™, which is a vehicle for buildings and organizations to deliver more thoughtful and intentional spaces that enhance human health and well-being. It will be one of the first buildings in the state to hold this designation. The project is being developed by Steve Navarro with The Furman Co. McMillan Pazdan Smith is the architect and construction is led by Harper General Contractors.
